LHF's luuid library only requires the lib/uuid part of e2fsprogs. It  
compiles to a rather reasonable 20 KB on Mac OS X.

An alternative to UUIDs might be something like the tag URI:

http://www.taguri.org/

This is what Nanoki uses when generating Atom's ids, e.g.:

<id>tag:svr225.stepx.com,2008-03-05:nanoki</id>
