Well, some hosts simply won't allow you to run long processes, and
others would charge you for it.   E.g., on my current host, running
searchd in the background would mean paying an extra $5 a month.  It
won't bankrupt me, but I've been trying to keep Sputnik democratic
where possible.

But, no big deal.  It's useful to have this option even if it won't
work for all users.  Also, it opens up the possibility of using other
search systems that follow a similar approach.  (PA mentioned solr.)

Note that there are several different ways to do it, the main
difference being whether you want to connect at the versium or sputnik
level.  At this point, at least for the proof-of-concept, I would
recommend the latter.

It might potentially make sense to also add a ".sphinx" action to
nodes, potentially letting each node decide what to export to Sphinx.
