Step 4 just meant that you should get Sputnik to process a request.  How you
do this would depend on whether you use CGI or Xavante.  So yes, I should
have mentioned that you might need to change your sputnik.cgi / sputnik.lua
after an upgrade.

I don't think this "lazy instantiation" would cause too much confusion.  But

I am guessing that everyone ends up editing _config and _passwords and many
edit _colors.  Apart from that, however, you can do pretty much everything
else without touching system nodes, I think.  E.g., if you want to change
templates, it might be wiser to define your own template node
(_my_templates) and keep there those variables that actually need to change.
